Single Speed in Philadelphia

In my experience, Philly is pretty flat.  I found this reasonably priced single speed bike that I adore.  But I'm not really a biker and I know that single speed is only for flatground.  Is Philly suitable for a single speed?  I spend a lot of time in W. Philly if it matters.
